Letters of Recommendation

Letters of recommendations are needed for many things. Scholarships, college applications, jobs, specialized programs, etc. If you need a recommendation from a teacher or counselor, please fill out the Student Profile and either email or give to the person you are asking to write you the letter.

 

If you are applying to a private college or university it is likely they will ask you to submit:

 

•    letters of recommendation from teachers
•    a letter of recommendation from your counselor
•    a Secondary School Report. These forms are called a variety of names (i.e. Secondary School Reports, School Reports, Counselor Reports, Counselor Evaluation)
•    a Mid-Year Report and possibly a Final Report

 

Your counselor will automatically send your transcript and a school profile along with the school report and letter of recommendation.

 

What Your Teachers Need to Write Your Letter of Recommendation
•    A stamped, self-sealing envelope pre-addressed to the college's Office of Admissions along with the address of the college with Oak Hills High School as the return address (7625 Cataba Road, Oak Hills CA 92344). You need a 44 cent stamp for a standard envelope and about a dollar for an over-sized envelope.
•    The due date for the letter of recommendation.
•    You must submit your request for a teacher letter of recommendation at least three weeks prior to the deadline date or November 30, whichever comes first. If your teacher wants you to provide him/her with a Student Profile (Brag Sheet) download one here.

 

What Your Counselor Needs to Write Your Letter of Recommendation
•    Your Student Profile/Brag Sheet or your Reflection Responses.
•    If required by the college, all Secondary and Mid-Year School Reports. If you have filled out an application on-line, you may need to download these reports to give to your counselor.
•    If required by the college, SAT or ACT scores (photocopies are okay) if you did not have them sent to RHS.
•    No envelopes for mailing are necessary for counselors.
•    The deadline for submitting these items is at least three weeks prior to the deadline date or Nov 30th, whichever comes first.

 

More About the Recommendation Letter

1.    Give your Student Profile or email your counselor at least three weeks prior to the deadline date.

2.    IMPORTANT: Ask teachers who know you well, not necessarily teachers with whom you earned a high grade.

3.    Your counselors' email address can be found on the Guidance Team page.

4. It is difficult for counselors to write stand-out letters of recommendation when we don't see you everyday in class, don't have specific examples of what makes you unique, and don't have specific examples of how we think you will contribute to the college campus to which you are applying. Here is your chance to give me this information so that I can write you the best letter of recommendation possible. I want you to get into the college of your choice and I want to write you an unforgettable letter of recommendation but I need your help.

5. Remember to write thank you notes to the people who took the time to write your recommendations. A little appreciation goes a long way. And make copies of everything.

6. The teacher who writes your letter of recommendation should be able to describe your contributions to the class or among the school community that they have personally observed either as a coach or club advisor, etc.
